Valliammai was a girl, who was known as Valli in short. She was eight years old and very curious about things. She had no one to play with her of her own age. So, her favourite pastime was to stand at the front door of her house and enjoy the happenings on the street. She was extremely fascinated by the bus that travelled between her village and the nearest town. She noticed that the bus travelled through her street twice in an hour. She watched the bus filled with new passengers everyday and developed a wish to ride in the bus.
Valli wants to Travel in the Bus
The wish of Valli to ride the bus became stronger day-by-day until it became a desire. She used to stare at the people while they got up and down the bus. If one of her friends went on a bus ride and described her about the bus journey, she became jealous of her.
Valli Discovers Details about the Bus Journey
For many days and months, Valli listened to the conversations between her neighbours and the people who travelled regularly by bus. She even asked them questions to gather information about the bus journey. From these conversations, Valli got to know that the nearest town from her village was six miles away and the bus would take 45 minutes for the journey. She also got to know that the fare of the bus for one way was thirty paise.
For Valli, sixty paise for a round trip in bus was a lot of money. But, she planned to collect it. She also calculated the time of her journey so that she could travel easily.
Valli Travelled in the Bus
One day in spring season, Valli stopped the bus. When the conductor asked her about the passenger, she told him that she herself was a passenger. Even when the conductor offered his help to get her on the bus, she refused and got on the bus by herself She sat on the front seat as offered by the conductor The conductor addressed Valli as 'madam. Valli had to make detailed plans for her first bus journey. She had saved all the money she could get. She controlled her desires to buy toys, peppermints, balloons etc. Even in the village fair, she did not take a ride on the merry-go-round Further, she planned to quietly leave the house when her mother was taking her afternoon sleep. Earlier, she used that time to explore the village.
View Outside the Bus
Valli was excited to see the view outside, but the canvas obstructed (blocked) her view. So, she stood up on her seat to have a better view. She saw a narrow road outside. On one side of the road was a canal beyond which there were palm trees, grasslands, mountains and blue sky. On the other side, there was a deep ditch and acres of green fields.
Passengers Inside the Bus
An elderly passenger in the bus called Valli as a child. He asked her not to stand. Valli did not like being called a child. So, she told him that she was not a child but an adult just like everyone else. The conductor also told Valli to sit, otherwise, she would hurt herself when the bus takes a sharp turn. But

The Bus Journey
The bus was travelling through empty landscape. Valli was surprised to see the bus moving smoothly even when any other vehicle would come infront of it. Trees seemed to be moving but would stop when the bus reached them
Suddenly, Vall was filled with joy when she saw a young cow running in the middle of the road infront of the bus. As the bus driver homed, the cow would get frightened and run faster infront of the bus. This made Valli laugh heartily. After some lime, the bus reached to a railroad crossing. The train passed the crossing gate with a lot of noise, shaking the bus.
The Bus Entered the Town
The bus entered the town. Vall enjoyed looking at the colourful shops when the bus passed through the market. The bus stopped at a stand and all the passengers, except Valli, got down.
The conductor asked Valli to get down the bus. Valli told him that she would return on the same bus and handed him the return fare. She told the conductor that she had come to have a ride on the bus. The conductor then offered her some cold drink but Valli refused the offer.
Valli saw a Dead Cow
The bus started its return journey after sometime. Valli saw the same wonderful sights on the return journey. She was not bored and greeted everything with the same excitement she had felt the first time.
Suddenly, she saw a young cow lying dead by the road side. It was the same cow that was running towards the bus when she was going to town.
The cow had been struck with a fast moving vehicle. She was filled with sadness on seeing her. The bus moved on but the thoughts of the dead cow haunted Valli. Further, she did not looked outside the window.
Valli Returns Home
The bus soon reached Valli's village. She told the conductor that she would ride the bus again. The conductor reminded her about the fare and laughed. Valli got off the bus and entered her house. She saw her mother talking to her aunt from South street. She heard them talking about many things they did not know about in the outside world. Valli agreed to this and remarked that there are many things happening without our knowledge. Surprised by her statement, Valli's aunt told her that Valli was behaving like a grown up lady. Valli smiled at this and knew that her mother and aunt would never get to know about her journey.

वल्ली को अपनी पहली यात्रा के लिए विस्तृत योजना बनानी पड़ी थी। उसने वह सारा धन जमा कर लिया था जो वह प्राप्त कर सकती थी। उसने खिलौने, पिपरमेन्ट, गुब्बारे इत्यादि खरीदने की अपनी इच्छा पर नियन्त्रण रखा। यहाँ तक कि गाँव के मेले में भी उसने चक्कर देने वाले हिण्डोले की सवारी नहीं की। उसने चुपचाप घर छोड़ने की योजना बनाई जब उसकी माँ अपनी दोपहर की नींद ले रही थी। उससे पूर्व वह इस समय का उपयोग गाँव में खोजबीन करने के लिए करती थी।
बस से बाहर का दृश्य
वल्ली बाहर का दृश्य देखने के लिए उत्तेजित थी, किन्तु तिरपाल (टाट) का परदा उसके परिदृश्य में रुकावट डाल रहा था। इसलिए, वह बेहतर प्रकार से दृश्य देखने के लिए अपनी सीट पर खड़ी हो गई। उसे बाहर एक संकरी सड़क दिखी। सड़क की एक ओर एक नहर थी जिसके पार ताड़ के पेड़, घास के मैदान, पहाड़ एवं नीला आसमान था। दूसरी ओर, एक गहरा गड्ढा था और कई एकड़ जमीन में फैले घास के मैदान थे।

बस में एक वृद्ध यात्री ने वल्ली को एक बालिका (बच्ची) कहकर सम्बोधित किया। उन्होंने उसे खड़ा होने के लिए मना किया। वल्ली को स्वयं को बच्ची कहलाना अच्छा नहीं लगा। इसलिए, उसने उन्हें बता दिया कि वह कोई बच्ची नहीं थी अपितु एक व्यस्क थी अन्य लोगों की ही तरह। कण्डक्टर ने भी वल्ली को बैठने को कहा अन्यथा बस के तेजी से मोड़ लेते समय वह स्वयं को चोटिल कर सकती थी। किन्तु वल्ली ने उसकी बात नहीं सुनी।

जब बस अगले बस स्टैण्ड (बस अड्डे पर रुकी तो वल्ली नीचे बैठ गई, क्योंकि उसे भय था कि कोई उसकी सीट ले लेगा। स्टैण्ड पर एक वृद्ध महिला आई और वल्ली के समीप बैठ गई। वल्ली को वह महिला भद्दी लगी। उनके कानों में बड़े-बड़े छेद थे और उन्होने भद्दे कुण्डल पहने हुए थे।
वह पान चबा रही थीं और ऐसा लग रहा था कि उसका सारा रस उनके होठो से बाहर निकलकर फैल जाएगा। जब उस महिला ने वल्ली से पूछा कि क्या वह अकेली है।और यह जानना चाहा कि वह कहाँ जा रही थी तो वल्ली ने उनसे उसकी चिन्ता न करने को कहा और अपना चेहरा खिड़की की ओर मोड़ लिया।

कण्डक्टर ने वल्ली को बस से नीचे उतरने को कहा। वल्ली ने उसे बताया कि वह इसी बस से वापस जाएगी और उसे वापसी का किराया पकड़ा दिया। उसने कण्डक्टर को बताया कि वह बस की यात्रा करने के लिए आई थी। तत्पश्चात कण्डक्टर ने उसे कोल्ड ड्रिंक पीने का प्रस्ताव दिया किन्तु उसने वह प्रस्ताव अस्वीकार कर दिया।
वल्ली ने एक मृत गाय देखी
बस ने अपनी वापसी यात्रा कुछ समय पश्चात् आरम्भ की। वल्ली ने वापसी यात्रा में भी वही अद्भुत दृश्य देखें। वह ऊबी नहीं एवं उसने हर चीज का स्वागत उतनी ही उत्सुकता से किया जो उसने पहली यात्रा में महसूस किया था।
अचानक, उसने सड़क के किनारे एक मृत गाय पड़ी देखी। यह वही गाय थी जो बस की ओर भाग रही थी जब बस कस्बे की ओर जा रही थी।
