THE MOST PRESSING PROBLEMS OF OUR COUNTRY
Even after independence more than thirty per cent of our people live below the line of poverty. In metropolitan cities even in slums you find the people are a bit well to do. Many of them have television sets and other facilities too. But in the rural areas a very large numbers of people have neither land nor a profession to support them. Big industries have snatched the petty work they were doing in their villages. The result is that they migrate to towns and cities where they can find a job. This migration creates problems in the cities. Slums are developed which are centers of many evils. Mumbai has hundreds-of them so have Delhi, Kanpur,Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. They are the centers of moral turpitude (extreme wickedness).
Illiteracy is another great problem in our country. Cities have schools and colleges. They have some literacy centers too run by NGOs (Non Government Organizations). Of course many of the slums remain out of bounds for them. But in rural areas you won't find a school for much together. The result is that in the far off villages most of the people remain illiterate. Landlords and traders of course send their sons to cities for education. But the girls even in their families remain illiterate.
The discrimination between men and women is so great that girls and women, in many cases are more than a serf (slave). In rural areas they work throughout the day-getting up early sleeping late. It talks upon their health. A large number of them suffer from tuberculosis. Even in cities women and girls are generally not at par even in most advanced families. This hampers the overall progress in the country. A cart with one broken wheel reaches nowhere.
Dowry is still in vogue in the country. Formerly it was limited to royal families and landlords. But now it has spread its fangs in all the castes and communities. In many cases if a girl does not bring sufficient dowry she is tortured and sometimes burnt alive. It is rather surprising that it is more prevalent among the educated people. The more qualified a boy is the more dowries his family expects. Even among scheduled castes if a boy is MBBS his market value is not less than 15 to 20 lakhs.
The mother of all the evils in our country is the rise in population. A century back in the days of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhaya the population of India (including Pakistan and Bangladesh) was 30 crore when he wrote his poem 'Vande Matram' 'Trinsh Koti Kanth Kal Kal ninad Karale'. Thirty crore people sing songs in your praise. Today the population of divided India alone is 140 crore . It has given rise to the problems of unemployment, poverty, corruption, immorality, environment, price rise, and people suffer even from lack of patriotism. Militancy and terrorism have spread in many areas especially in Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Uttar pardesh, Bastar in Chattisgarh, North East States and a part of Andhra Pradesh.
