05) The Necklace (Guy De Maupassant)

Lesson Summary

Matilda Loisel and her Unhappiness

Matilda Liosel was a pretty married lady who had high ambitions. She wished to be wealthy and dreamt of a marvellous life. However, she was born into a family of clerks. She was also married to a clerk, M Liosel who worked in the office of Board of Education.

Matilda believed that she was born for a life of luxury. She always used to dream of elegant dinners, fine crockery, beautiful frocks and delicious dishes. So, whenever she saw her rich friend, she felt disappointment.

M Loisel brings an Invitation

One evening Matilda's husband, M Loisel returned from his office with a large envelope. The envelope consisted of an invitation to a ball (party) at the Minister's residence. M Loisel thought that his wife would be happy to read the invitation but she was not happy to see the invitation. Matilda told her husband that she did not have a good dress to wear in the ball.

New Dress was Bought

After realising Matilda's distress, her husband M. Loisel told her that she could buy a new dress. He had saved four hundred Francs to buy a gun to join some hunting parties. Now, he would give the money to Matilda for buying a new dress.

Matilda still not Happy

Matilda bought a new dress but she was still unhappy. Her husband asked about the reason of her unhappiness. Matilda told her husband that she would not go for the ball as she did not have any jewellery to wear with her dress. Her husband suggested that she could wear some natural flowers.

But Matilda was not convinced and replied that she would look shabby among the rich women. Finally, her husband advised her that she should go to Mme Forestier, her friend and borrow her jewellery.

Matilda Gets Necklace from Mme Forestier

Next day, Matilda went to her friend's house. She told Mme Forestier her problem. Mme Forestier brought her jewel case and asked Matilda to make her choice. Matilda tried various pieces of jewellery but ultimately decided to borrow a diamond necklace.

Matilda at the Night of Ball The night of the ball arrived and Matilda was happy at the occasion. She looked very beautiful. Everyone liked her and she was the centre of attraction. She danced with great enthusiasm and happiness. She went home at 4 am. Then they hired an old carriage (cab) and returned home.

The Necklace was Lost

When Matilda returned home and was changing her dress, she wanted to see her beauty in final view before the mirror. Suddenly, she noticed that the necklace was not around her neck. She cried out and informed her husband that she had lost the necklace:

Her husband searched for the necklace on every place, where they went last night. He went to the police and the cab offices. He also put an advertisement in the newspapers offering reward, but the necklace was not found. So he advised her wife to write a letter to her friend telling her that the clasp (lock) of the necklace was broken and she needed some time to get the necklace repaired.

Matilda Replace the Necklace

At last, Matilda and her husband decided to replace the necklace with a necklace that looked similar to it. They searched for a similar necklace everywhere and found it in a shop at Palais Royal.

The necklace cost 40,000 Francs but they bargained it to 36000 Francs. Her husband gave her 18000 francs which his father had left for him. He took a loan of the remaining amount and purchased a diamond necklace. Finally, Matilda returned the necklace to her friend.

Life of Poverty

After replacing the necklace, Matilda and her husband lived in poverty. They sent away the maid, changed their lodgings and rented some rooms of the attic. Matilda had to do all the work. Matilda started dressing like a commoner and even went to get her grocery shopping

Her husband worked day and night. He spent his evening putting the books of some merchants and did some copying's at night. Finally they were able to pay off their debt after ten years of poverty.

Matilda had Changed

After ten years, Matilda had changed. She had became an old, strong, hard woman. Her hair was badly dressed, her skirts were awry (uneven), her hands were red and she spoke in a loud tone. She would often think if she had not lost the necklace, her life would be better.

The Truth of Necklace Revealed

One Sunday while Matilda was walking in the Champs- Elysees, she saw Mme Forestier. She was looking charming and beautiful as she had looked ten years before.

Now that all the debts were paid off, Matilda decided to tell Mme Forestier about her necklace. At this, Mme Forestier informed her that it was a fake necklace which cost only five hundred Francs.

Ans. Though the characters speak in English, it is not their language.

Maupassant (the author) wrote the story in French and it was translated into English.

The text has enough words in French to prove it otherwise. First, the very names of characters like Mme Loisel, Mme Forestier and the Minister's name George Ramponneau indicate their French origin. Then, the words for currency like 'Franc' and 'Sou' show the same. Also, the shop's location at 'Palais- Royal' and 'Champs-Elysees' point out the French history of the characters and the story.

Q12. Honesty is the best policy. Comment.

Ans. Honesty is definitely the best policy. Falsehood and hypocrisy seem very attractive and rewarding at first. But, the path they tread on leads to nothing but misery, evil and utter gloom. Honesty, on the contrary, seems to be a difficult choice in pursuit of material happiness. However, it is the only choice for a life of contentment, peace and everlasting happiness.

Q13. We should be content with what life gives us.

Ans. One must learn to live within one's means and be content with what one has. Life is a great mystery. For some, it is all riches, comfort, name and fame. While for others, it is nothing but sheer hunger, poverty, anguish and an everyday quest for bare survival. One may try to improve his lot by honest means but eventually must be at peace with what one manages to have.
